DOVER, Del. — NASCAR is creating its first big play in the world of enlarged legal sports betting, trusting a sports data partnership will cause gamblers having the ability to bet during races much greater than just who gets the checkered flag.
Professional Sports has been the exclusive provider of NASCAR information to licensed sportsbooks, officials announced Friday.
“NASCAR is one of those sports that I think has an enormous opportunity to present an intriguing betting product, particularly in-game,” said Expert spokesman Chris Dougan.
Professional Sports will create an official NASCAR gaming offering for lawful sportsbooks, utilizing NASCAR’s official data feed.
The exclusive bargain lets Genius Sports assist books provide up-to-the-minute odds and a ton of conventional wagers and prop bets.
“We feel that NASCAR has a little more of an upside in the in-race event experience than a number of the other stick-and-ball sports,” said Brian Herbst, senior vice president of broadcasting and innovation for NASCAR. “The in-game experience that we are building through Genius will have live odds around NASCAR.”
So a bettor could see chances on their chosen driver differ through the race before deciding to place a bet. NASCAR hopes that will keep fans interested (Fox Sports has averaged 5.14 million viewers this year ) in watching for the length of a race.
“What can happen in the next five minutes? What could happen in the lap? It opens the door to some hugely exciting new marketplace,” Dougan said. “NASCAR is currently beginning to recognize this is a huge fan engagement tool. We give them that supply and that reach”
Herbst said it must take six to eight weeks for the tech to come together for in-race gambling, resulting in live race chances by the 2020 season.
Before the start of this 2019 year, NASCAR acquired an integrity program and gaming policy in which the sanctioning body allowed all teams and tracks the ability to sell promotion sponsorships to sports betting companies and accredited sportsbooks.
One of the restrictions: drivers and team members are banned from betting on races or disclosing personal information. They’re permitted to take part in fantasy sports concerning the three national touring series, Cup, Xfinity and Truck, but may not accept awards with a value of more than $250 in any games. The bans are in line with other major sports.
Football, baseball and basketball historically generate the bulk of sports gambling in the United States and NASCAR has yet to spark interest among the masses. Even with less inventory than other popular sports, NASCAR’s move is an effort to split a sliver of a marketplace with billions bet each year.
Vernon Kirk, director of the Delaware lottery, stated because full-scale sports gambling started in Delaware on June 5, 2018, about one-tenth of 1% has been wagered on automobile racing ($208,100 from $154.8 million), through April 28.
“I don’t think we have done a excellent job of accepting the tools that our in our tool kit and leveraging those,” Herbst said. “We were not actually at the gaming conversation until this season. We are still carrying a sort of pragmatic, staggered strategy to it.”
Nevada’s effective monopoly on sports gambling ended last spring, when the Supreme Court ruled the ban ought to be lifted. Casinos in seven other states — Rhode Island, Delaware, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Mexico — currently accept wagers on sports. The list is expected to rise by next year with numerous states considering bills.
